Marble Countertops Houston
Houston marble countertops have a classic elegant look and are a beautiful surface to look at. Marble slabs come from mines around the world and offer a wide choice of colors from solid white and solid black to rose, yellow, green and gray variations. Marble is the natural stone of choice for its looks. It also has great longevity however it must be treated and requires maintenance. The most famous marble is Carrara marble for white countertops.
Marble is igneous rock, so like granite, it is heat resistant. However it is not stain resistant. It is more porous than granite and it absorbs liquids easily. This means that it is a material certain to have stains when a liquid like wine, juice or oil is spilled on it. The liquid can penetrate deeply into the stone over time.
Fortunately there are sealers which can be used and re applied every few years.
Etches are caused when polish is eaten away and the marble material is marred. Some people prefer the etches and stains which over time blend into the veins. Ageing gracefully gives it character.
A honed finish is a sanded matt finish which is preferred in the kitchen. However, the sanding of marble opens up the pores more so it is more susceptible to staining. The pores can also trap dirt and germs. As a result sealing is required. Seal professionally at the beginning and then DIY ongoing. A polished finish as opposed to a honed finish does not open the pores as much but a polished surface requires more cleaning. Cleaning is easy with sprayed dish soap and warm water. For stains mix baking soda and water into a paste and leave overnight to draw out the stain.
For these reasons marble countertops are more recommended for locations in the house other than the kitchen where there is less chance of a noticeable stain, scratch, chip or crack. Note that there are professional products out there to repair marble countertops. You can also tint color repair to closely match the marble.
Marble countertops are the most expensive of countertop materials. The cost of marble countertops varies according to where the marble originates, its thickness, area and craftsmanship needed in installation.
